Breakthrough legislation that will drastically cut tech companies’ ability to stop employees from talking about abuse includes: Headed to the Washington State Governor’s Office. GeekWire report: Last week, Washington lawmakers House Bill 1795 — Also known as the Silenced No More Act, this act was a huge victory for activists who fought to limit nondisclosure and non-discriminatory consent. Proposed by Congressman Liz Berry (D-Seattle), this law makes it illegal for companies to prohibit employees from discussing “unlawful discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and time violations, and sexual assault.”
“This legislation is about empowering workers,” said Berry. name last week. “It’s about giving workers a say. Despite the progress we’ve made in recent years, too many workers still have to sign NDAs and agreements that silence them. We will allow survivors to share their experiences if they choose to do so.” NDAs have long been a common practice in many large tech companies, often stating that employees must repay severance pay or face other financial consequences if they breach their contract.
Washington state will be the second state to ban this type of gag order. California Passed its own Silenced No More Act last year. The bill was passed despite strong opposition from trade groups, claiming that employees could be harmed if companies decided to limit or not pay severance pay at all.
