WHO suspends UN donation of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin vaccine for COVID-19 – SABC Report

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday it had suspended delivery by the United Nations company COVID-19 Covaxin, developed by India’s Bharat Biotech, to allow manufacturers to upgrade equipment and address weaknesses in testing.

WHO has asked countries that have received immunizations to take appropriate action, according to the statement, but did not specify what appropriate action would be.

The WHO says the vaccine is effective in the absence of safety precautions, but discontinuation of production for export will result in discontinuation of Covaxin supply. He said the suspension was in response to a WHO post-emergency use (EUL) test conducted from March 14 to 22, and the pharmacist had indicated his decision to suspend production of Covaxin for export.

Bharat Biotech did not respond to requests for comment outside the business hours.

The WHO said the agency had tried to comply by disseminating GMP deficiencies and developed a maintenance and prevention plan, for compliance with the Indian Drug Enforcement Agency (DCGI) and the WHO.
