Winnie Madixera-Various reactions to plans to rename Brandfort after Mandela-SABC News

Free State residents and political organizations responded with mixed emotions to plans to rename Brandfort after struggle veteran Winnie Madikisera Mandela. The Freedom Government emphasizes the need to preserve the legacy of all Freedom Fighters.

Brandfort is a vast free-state town with a long history. Named after the former President of the Free State of Orange, Johannes Brand.

Winnie Madixera Mandela, a perennial late struggle, was banished there in May 1977. Majuwe Maswe Township’s iconic House 802 was her residence. Mama Winnie lived at home with her youngest daughter, Jinji, for almost nine years. The house has been restored to become a museum. Some residents are welcoming the move to rename the area after her.

“I was growing up under Winnie, so there’s nothing wrong with changing the name of this town to name it after the late Winnie. When we were young, mommy took care of us. So I was one of the activists. She gave us food, “says one resident.

“Winnie has played a big role in the community, so renaming it is a good idea. We need to remove the apartheid name,” adds another community member.

Freestate DA leader Roy Janquielson has questioned the timing of the name change, saying it is being held for elections prior to local elections.

“People at Brandfort struggle with inadequate service. It was months ago that there was no water, inadequate sewage and debris removal, and lack of road infrastructure. Such decisions need to be weighed against the financial implications of service delivery in the municipality, “Jankielson said.

The Free State ANC was unable to comment after its leadership was revoked by the Supreme Court.

Free State EFF leader Mandisa Makesini says the move is far behind.

“Our people must be the ones who fought for the fight to this day, so every time we have to rename the town as a hero, we are told about money I’m not going to support you. “

Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, said talks are underway.

“Successful processes require consultation. We are in the process of consulting with Madikizera and Mandela’s family, as well as the locals here, so any objections can be addressed.” Said Minister Mthethwa.

Meanwhile, plans are underway to rename the popular Hoffman Square in Bloemfontein after its late political supporter Charlotte Maxique.
