Woods, named Mickelson in the PGA championship field

Former world number one Tiger Woods and defending champion Phil Mickelson were both called up on Monday for next week’s PGA Championship.

Woods, who made a dramatic return from injuries sustained in a car accident last month at the Masters, has not played since his last round in Augusta.

The 15-time Major winner – including the PGA Championship in 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007 – has yet to confirm that he will be serving the second Major of the 2022 season at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. on 19-22 May.

Excitement surrounding Woods’ potential participation at Southern Hills was heightened after he recently played a practice round on the field.

Woods reportedly plans to play the tournament if there are no setbacks.

Woods has said he hopes to play at the 150th British Open in St Andrews in July and a two-day tune-up event in Ireland before that, but hasn’t been to other tournaments including the PGA Championship and the US Open fest June in Boston.

Mickelson, meanwhile, has not played since he caused an uproar in February following the release of his comments about the new Saudi-backed LIV golf series in February.

Mickelson, 51, described the LIV series’ Saudi backers as “scary” with a “horrific human rights record” but said he was willing to engage with them to gain leverage to “reshape” the US PGA Tour.

Mickelson subsequently apologized for the comments and announced he was taking a “much needed break” from golf.

According to US reports, Mickelson has held talks with PGA of America officials about his schedule but has not yet decided whether he will defend his title.

“I think he’s trying to figure out when the timing is right for him,” PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh said on the 5 Clubs Conversations podcast.

“I think the game is also trying to figure out the right timing for him. how long is enough And is he mentally and physically ready for it?”
