Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi may be a bit late to the party when it comes to foldable phones but it’s already making quite a few waves. Its first foldable handset, the Mi MIX Fold, has already made quite a few waves: according to reports, more than 30,000 fans bought it within a minute from its launch in Mainland China.
Foldable phones are the future?
Foldable phones don’t bring much to the table hardware-wise: they have the configuration of a “traditional” flagship handset. What makes them stand out is their foldable screen. Where the users of a “normal” handset have to make do with a 5” or 6” screen, those choosing a foldable phone have almost twice as much screen real estate – and the only difference when it comes to the phones’ size in their pockets is the thickness of the handset.
Imagine enjoying a streamed concert, movie or even your favourite Betway live games on an 8” high-resolution screen. The experience is almost always superior. You can even display the Betway live game of your choice and keep the live betting interface open on the screen at the same time without any compromises. And when it’s over, folding your phone and putting it back into your pocket where it belongs
Mi MIX Fold
Mi MIX Fold is the first foldable handset Xiaomi has launched – and hopefully, it’s not the last. The handset has nothing new when compared to the competition’s devices: it comes with flagship-worthy hardware, an 8” flexible AMOLED screen, and another 6.52” one that you can use when the phone is folded. The handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 System-on-a-Chip, and comes with three memory configurations – 12GB RAM with 256GB storage, 12GB RAM with 512GB storage, and 16GB RAM with 512GB storage, matching a mid-range business or gaming laptop. And its camera is also excellent: it has a triple camera setup with a 108MP main sensor capable of recording in 8K, an 8MP telephoto camera with a liquid lens that allows optical zoom of up to 3x, and a 13MP ultrawide camera on its back. And when it comes to music, the phone has something for its fans, too – it comes with four stereo speakers tuned by Harman Kardon for the best possible audio experience.
Price and availability
The Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold is currently only available in Mainland China, with no word yet on its global availability.
Price-wise, it is cheaper than the average foldable flagship available today: the base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage reportedly retails at RMB 9,999 (around R22,000 or $1540), while the more capable models will likely be more expensive by a notch.
The fact that Xiaomi has moved into this segment – considering its history of selling flagship-worthy hardware at a friendlier price than its competitors – makes it likely for the company to launch even more affordable in the near future.
