Durban – At least 56 people were injured in a bus crash on the R56 near the Umkomaas Valley near Ixopo late Monday evening.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the bus had deviated from the roadway and had overturned.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesman Craig Botha said 10 passengers were seriously injured, 26 seriously and 22 others were slightly injured.
“The patients were treated on site before being transported to hospital by several ambulance services,” he added.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this point and police and road authorities are investigating further.
Last week, 10 people were killed in a bus crash on the N3 between Durban and Johannesburg. It is alleged that an Eldos Coaches bus sustained a tire blowout causing the driver to lose control and overturn him.
Eldos Coaches has since set up services to help injured passengers or those who lost loved ones in the crash.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has expressed concerns about the anxiety these accidents cause, especially as many use long-distance buses to return home during the holiday season.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to work with all stakeholders and road users to ensure that our roads are safe and that those who use them behave responsibly,” he said.
