{Youth DAY STORY of SNE} Presidency: ‘370,000 jobs created in first quarter of this year.’ – SABC News

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday issued a newsletter in which she stated that this Youth Day she will remember the youth of yesteryear in honor of her courage and sacrifices.

Although today’s youth has to deal with high unemployment, the President stated that social employment offers the youth hope and opportunity. South African youth are facing the pandemic of unemployment, and the government has promised employment since the start of freedom this year 370,000 jobs were created in the first four years. However, according to Stats SA, the employment rate in South Africa is 66.5% in the first quarter of 2022.

The graph below shows the number of youth unemployed, regardless of education level:

“Today, the young people of South Africa are facing new struggles in their quest for a life of dignity and in the pursuit of a better life. Although we have made substantial progress in broadening opportunities for young people in primary and higher education, millions of young people remain unemployed.

The President added: “I believe that even if millions of people are unemployed, there is no shortage of jobs to build a better South Africa. This is the fundamental tenet of the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which is designed as a once-in-a-generation effort to tackle scale unemployment, and employment incentives are on track to support one million jobs across a wide range of programs, all of which contribute to the improvement of communities and the creation of public goods that last outside the work itself.

The presidency has recently launched an initiative through the incentives of the Social Work Association that will pioneer a new and innovative approach to public employment.

“The Social Employment Fund will create 50,000 new employment opportunities in the first phase before being scaled up further in the following phases. The unique feature of social employment is that it recognizes that unemployed people in communities are a powerful resource for development, not a ‘problem’ that needs to be solved. “Another important program that is now being implemented, and that I announced in the State of the Nation Address, is a revitalized National Youth Service.”
