Zondo Denies Any Malice in Delayed Release of Part 5 of State Capture Report – SABC News

Chief Justice and Chairman of the State Capture Commission Raymond Zondo has denied any malice in the delayed release of Part Five of the State Capture Report. The official handover of the report was delayed a second time on Monday after the commission failed to hand over the report to President Cyril Ramaphosa by 6pm.

Last week, the commission identified certain challenges that prevented it from meeting the original June 15 deadline. Zondo has hit back after speculation that he and President Cyril Ramaphosa held a meeting on the day the State Capture report’s fifth part was expected to be released, causing further delays.

Zondo denies meeting with the President and claims there was an agreement for the postponement to check for errors before publication, which Zondo claims he wasn’t Monday due to his attendance at the JSC Justice Interview, Mandisa Maya been able to.

The presidency previously dismissed claims that Ramaphosa interfered with the commission’s work, a claim Zondo also denies. The report is now expected to be released on Wednesday.

“Litmus test for political elites”

The release of the fifth and final edition of the State Capture Report will be a litmus test of the maturity of the political elites and their commitment to the country’s democratic ideals, says Professor Joleen Steyn Kotze, senior research specialist in democracy and citizenship at the Human Sciences Research Council.

According to Kotze, political leaders need to show maturity as the process progresses.

“You know, I think if we look at the work of the Zondo Commission and the very critical issues that the state detection team has been tasked with investigating. I think it’s a good strategy to practice due diligence and it may take a little longer to make sure you have all eyes crossed etc. Because we are talking about the senior political elite involved in the state conquest .”
